Morzine Ski Resort: A Rich History
Â
Morzine gets its name from the Latin word “morgenes,” which means “border area,” similar to Morgins on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil border. This isolated town has its origins in farming and slate mining. The first road connecting Morzine to Thonon, on the shores of Lake Geneva, was built in 1862, opening the town to trade. By around 1930, winter tourism began to flourish, with some of Europe’s earliest ski lifts being established. The Pléney cable car, built in 1934, initially welcomed summer visitors, hikers, and mountaineers before skiing became popular in the region.
Jean Vuarnet Put Morzine Ski Resort On The Map
In 1960, Jean Vuarnet won the gold medal in downhill skiing at the Squaw Valley Olympics in the USA. He gained fame for his innovative “Egg Technique” (also known as the Shuss/Tuck).Â
After his success, Vuarnet returned to Morzine and was tasked with developing Morzine-Avoriaz into a premier ski resort. In late 1960, the Nyon cable car was constructed, followed by the Avoriaz cable car in 1961. In 1963, he collaborated with a group of young architects to design the buildings in Avoriaz, ensuring that they harmonised with the surrounding cliffs. His vision also aimed to connect ski resorts in France and Switzerland, ultimately creating the expansive Portes du Soleil region as it is known today.
